Sri Lanka 22nd Amendment debate moves to Colombo as Saliya Peiris and other legal experts discuss judicial independence and citizens’ rights.
The Sri Lanka 22nd Amendment will take centre stage in Colombo today as legal experts and academics gather for a public discussion on judicial independence and popular sovereignty.
The public assembly will examine the impact of the 22nd Constitutional Amendment presented to Parliament by the National People’s Power government.
The independent people’s movement “Save our Sovereignty – SOS” is organizing the event for the second time under the theme, “Is the 22nd Amendment coming to tame the courts?”
The seminar is scheduled to begin on Friday, August 21, at 3:30 PM at the Capri Club conference hall, No. 62, Sir Anagarika Dharmapala Mawatha, Colombo 07.
Legal Experts Join Sri Lanka 22nd Amendment Discussion
Several prominent legal experts and academics are due to examine different aspects of the constitutional amendment.
President’s Counsel Saliya Peiris, a former President of the Bar Association of Sri Lanka, will take part.
Other speakers include Dr. Attorney Kumaravadivel Guruparan, former Head of the Department of Law at the University of Jaffna, and Attorney Nuwan Bopage.
Veteran Attorney Sudarshana Gunawardena will moderate the discussion.
Judicial Independence and Popular Sovereignty in Focus
Any amendment to Sri Lanka’s Constitution directly affects the country’s fundamental law, the separation of powers and the independence of the judiciary.
The balance between the executive, legislature and judiciary is regarded as a foundation of democratic governance.
The organizing committee says the event seeks to inform the public about the objectives of the new amendment process the government is preparing to present.
The discussion will also examine practical and legal interpretations of its provisions and their potential impact on citizens’ rights.
The event therefore places the Sri Lanka 22nd Amendment within a wider debate over judicial independence, constitutional power and popular sovereignty.
Public Invited to Attend Colombo Seminar
The assembly is open to legal professionals, university academics, civil activists and members of the public interested in democracy and the rule of law.
Organizers have issued an open invitation to citizens who wish to attend.
However, seating is limited and will be allocated on a first-come, first-served basis.
The Capri Club is located on the right-hand side when travelling from the Kollupitiya Liberty Roundabout towards Pura Hala.
The gathering provides a public forum for examining the Sri Lanka 22nd Amendment and its possible implications for the courts, citizens’ rights and democratic governance.
