Foreign employment fraud suspect who allegedly posed as a pilot is remanded over claims involving more than Rs. 13.5 million.
A 44-year-old woman accused of a major foreign employment fraud while posing as a pilot has been remanded after appearing before the Aluthkade Magistrate’s Court.
The Colombo Fraud Investigation Bureau arrested the woman, a resident of Nochchiyagama in Anuradhapura, together with her alleged husband in Kurunegala.
Police acted following a complaint from a bus owner in Piliyandala who claimed the suspect obtained millions of rupees from him.
Fake Uniform Used in Foreign Employment Fraud
According to investigators, the suspect also claimed she worked as an air hostess at Ratmalana Airport.
Police allege that she arrived to collect money while wearing a fake Air Force uniform, strengthening the impression that she had aviation connections.
The bus owner allegedly handed over more than Rs. 13.5 million on several occasions after she promised to arrange foreign employment through relatives living abroad.
According to the complaint, he even sold one of his buses and gave the suspect Rs. 6 000,000.
After collecting the money, she allegedly claimed that she had travelled overseas and avoided further contact with the complainant.
Complaints Reported Across Several Police Areas
Investigators also linked the suspect to another alleged foreign employment fraud involving a woman from Matara.
The Colombo Fraud Investigation Bureau said she had previously obtained Rs. 2 200,000 from that woman by promising overseas employment.
Authorities have also received complaints concerning alleged frauds from more than 15 police stations.
These include complaints reported through Kollupitiya and Bambalapitiya police.
The investigation into the suspect and the wider series of alleged financial frauds is continuing.
