More than 60 workers have been killed after an illegal gold mine suddenly collapsed in Sudan’s West Kordofan region, causing widespread shock and grief in the area.
The tragic incident occurred on Sunday while workers were extracting gold ore when the mine unexpectedly caved in. According to local sources, more than 60 bodies have been recovered so far.
A Major Gold-Producing Country
Sudan is one of the leading gold-producing countries on the African continent. However, much of the country’s gold production relies on traditional and artisanal mining methods that operate without official permits or adequate safety regulations.
These mines often lack proper structural support and emergency safety equipment, creating hazardous conditions in which landslides and mine collapses can occur frequently.
