In a groundbreaking outcome for the 2024 parliamentary elections, the National People’s Power (NPP) has swept the Colombo district, winning 14 out of 18 parliamentary seats. This victory was fueled by a total of 788,636 votes, reflecting the party’s growing influence in urban areas.
The Samagi Jana Balavegaya (SJB) came in second, securing four seats with 208,249 votes, showcasing a weaker-than-expected performance in the district.
Notably, the New Democratic Front (NDF), with 51,020 votes, and the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP), failed to win any seats in Colombo. The SLPP’s inability to claim a single seat underscores its steep decline from previous years when it was a dominant political force in the region.
Former Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardena, a key figure of the SLPP, was among the high-profile casualties in Colombo. This result signals a major shift in the electorate’s preferences, with voters rejecting traditional powerhouses in favor of the NPP, led by President Anura Kumara Dissanayake.
The NPP’s dominance in Colombo not only consolidates its stronghold in urban areas but also marks a historic moment in Sri Lankan politics, redefining the nation’s political landscape.
