Rehan Jayawickrama, a prominent political figure and the former organizer for the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) in Weligama, has officially announced his resignation from active politics. He confirmed that he has submitted his resignation letter to party leader Sajith Premadasa, marking the end of his political journey after a series of election defeats.
Jayawickrama, who had served as the Mayor of Weligama Municipal Council and contested the Matara District seat in the most recent parliamentary elections, cited his personal challenges in the political arena. He noted the difficulties he faced due to continuous electoral setbacks and expressed that it was time to focus on his family and their well-being. Despite his strong commitment to public service, Jayawickrama stated that this decision, although not easy, was the right one for his future.
Previously, Jayawickrama’s political career faced turbulence, including his removal from the position of Chairman of the Weligama Urban Council in 2020. This was a significant moment in his career, as he had been a key figure within the United National Party (UNP) before his shift to the SJB.
This decision reflects a growing trend among some Sri Lankan political figures who are stepping back after facing electoral challenges, indicating a shift in the country’s political landscape. Jayawickrama’s resignation marks the close of an era for his involvement in the public service sector, after years of both successes and setbacks in local and national politics.
