MP Namal Rajapaksa, National Organizer of the Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP), has accused the government of preparing to dismiss 750,000 public servants, contradicting its earlier promise to strengthen the public service. Speaking at the opening of an office dedicated to addressing political vendettas at Nelum Mawatha, Battaramulla, Rajapaksa criticized the government for failing to honor its election commitments and accused it of engaging in a politically motivated campaign.
Rajapaksa stated that while the government has announced plans to reduce the public workforce, it has not presented a clear strategy or explanation for the move. He expressed concern over what he described as a “political hunt” within the state apparatus, targeting trade union leaders and individuals deemed to oppose the government.
He further claimed that the SLPP’s Bar Association has committed to standing up for victims of political vendettas and ensuring legal recourse for those affected. He criticized the government for its perceived lack of direction, labeling it incompetent and accusing it of engaging in political repression similar to the actions of past administrations.
Rajapaksa also alleged that the government is attempting to suppress the media, stating that threats against journalists and media institutions are part of a broader campaign of political repression. He warned that this repression is a tactic to divert public attention and consolidate power under false accusations.
“The government’s program is clear: bring political repression, label dissenters as thieves, and remand them to continue their campaign. But we will not halt our journey or stand by silently while they threaten democracy and suppress voices,” Rajapaksa said.
