The Bank of Ceylon Employees Union has written to the President, informing him that it is preparing to launch trade union action in response to several issues, including the Ministry of Finance’s decision to cut an incentive allowance that had been approved by the Board of Directors for the 85th anniversary of the Bank of Ceylon.
In the letter, the Union expressed strong displeasure over the Ministry’s actions, stating that bank employees have never been treated this way in the past. It accused the Ministry of taking steps to belittle and undermine their contributions to the banking sector.
The Union emphasized that attempting to solve the country’s economic challenges by cutting employee benefits is an ineffective approach and will not lead to real solutions.
It further stated that multiple written and verbal requests had been made for a meeting with the President to discuss these concerns. However, despite repeated efforts, no positive response has been received.
Additionally, the Union warned that the Ministry of Finance must take full responsibility for any negative impact on the financial system resulting from the trade union actions initiated due to these unresolved issues.
