Gampaha, Sri Lanka – Deputy Minister of Labour, Mahinda Jayasinghe, has expressed confidence that the National People’s Power (NPP) will achieve an even greater victory in the upcoming local government elections than in the last general election.
Speaking at a media briefing in Gampaha, Jayasinghe emphasized that the people of Sri Lanka had already made a major decision for social transformation in September and November, and he believes that this momentum will continue into the local government polls.
“The people of this country took a big decision in the months of September and November for social transformation. So, we have to say that the people will move forward further in the upcoming local government election,” he stated.
He dismissed concerns about political alliances forming against the NPP, stressing that their primary goal remains empowering villages and local communities.
“So, whoever forms an alliance, it is not a problem for us. Our theme is to build the village – give it to us. We have not yet finished the theme.”
Jayasinghe underscored the crucial role of local government institutions, stating that they are responsible for handling essential services from birth to death. He argued that the only way to eliminate corruption and inefficiencies in these institutions is to place them under NPP governance.
“We need the power of the village. Because we know that the institution related to many daily activities from the birth to the death of a person is the local government institution. So, only if those institutions operate efficiently without fraud, corruption, and irregularities will the people of the country be able to fulfill the work that they need to do from their local government institution.”
He concluded by urging the public to support the NPP in the local government elections, just as they did in the presidential and parliamentary elections, to ensure better governance and improved public services.
