Cabin crew members of SriLankan Airlines have launched an onboard strike in protest against recent cuts to their allowances and unmet demands concerning their working conditions.
The action, organized by the SriLankan Airlines Cabin Crew Union, was triggered by the reallocation of their in-flight meal allowance—a long-standing benefit that has now become a flashpoint for broader dissatisfaction.
Union representatives said the strike followed repeated, unresolved complaints to the airline’s management. In addition to the meal allowance issue, the protest also centers around demands for a fixed annual salary increment, the reinstatement of arrival incentives, increases to premium allowances, and adequate hotel accommodation that adheres to international standards and is situated in city centers.
The crew’s protest reflects mounting frustration over what they describe as an erosion of basic entitlements and a lack of response from corporate leadership. As the dispute escalates, it raises concerns about potential disruptions to flight operations and further reputational damage to the national carrier.
