Professor Nirmal Ranjith Dewasiri delivers a scathing warning, calling the Maliman-led National People’s Power administration the worst government in modern Sri Lankan history, while drawing stark parallels to Nepal’s youth uprising.
Professor Nirmal Ranjith Dewasiri of the University of Colombo has sharply criticised the current National People’s Power (NPP) administration, branding it as the worst government Sri Lanka has seen in its modern political history. In a strongly worded statement shared through a video on his social media account, Dewasiri alleged that the Maliman-led government has failed across every measure of governance and accountability, plunging the nation into deeper discontent.
He argued that this administration’s failures surpass even the most turbulent governments of the past, highlighting its inability to deliver stability, economic relief, or democratic trust. “This is the worst government in the history of modern governance in Sri Lanka,” Dewasiri asserted, questioning whether the leadership itself recognises the gravity of its own failures.
Drawing a striking comparison, Dewasiri pointed to the recent youth-led uprising in Nepal, which erupted under a leftist government. He suggested that Sri Lanka, under Maliman’s leadership, could face similar unrest if public frustration continues to boil over. “What happened in Nepal can happen here too,” he warned, emphasising that the government’s survival will depend entirely on its own decisions and ability to respond to growing dissatisfaction.
His remarks have sparked debate across political circles and on social media, with many Sri Lankans resonating with his criticism. The professor’s statement amplifies concerns that Sri Lanka may be heading toward a volatile period of unrest if corrective measures are not urgently undertaken.
