A fiery exchange in Parliament has reignited controversy over SriLankan Airlines, with the opposition insisting that only a heavyweight like Dhammika Perera can fix the national carrier’s crisis.
A heated cross-talk broke out in Parliament today when opposition MP Chithral Fernando alleged that SriLankan Airlines Chairman Sarath Ganegoda is caught in a conflict of interest. MP Fernando claimed that Ganegoda also heads another domestic airline, raising concerns about neutrality and accountability in managing the national carrier. He urged the government to immediately “look into this matter” and suggested that well-known businessman Dhammika Perera should be appointed as CEO of SriLankan Airlines to restore confidence and performance. According to the MP, the airline needs strong leadership with proven business expertise.
Responding to the remark, Minister Bimal Rathnayake argued that decisions should be based on “the work carried out by a person” rather than the positions they hold elsewhere. He insisted that evaluating performance is more important than focusing on titles alone.
The exchange highlighted rising political pressure over the struggling national airline’s future and leadership direction.
