High level discussions between Sri Lanka and the International Cricket Council signal a possible leadership shake up at Sri Lanka Cricket as authorities explore an interim administration to safeguard the sport and prevent international sanctions.
Sri Lanka’s government has confirmed that discussions are underway with the International Cricket Council regarding the possibility of placing Sri Lanka Cricket under an interim administrative structure. Sports Minister Sunil Kumara Gamage stated that the proposal involves either appointing an interim committee or empowering a special administrator to guide the cricket board through governance reforms.
The Minister revealed that the matter is being handled with urgency and that the President has personally intervened in these negotiations. According to government officials, the initiative forms part of a wider national strategy aimed at strengthening cricket governance and restoring confidence in the sport’s management.
Gamage explained that several stages of a long term development plan for Sri Lankan cricket have already been completed. The government intends to continue implementing this plan in order to rebuild the sport and secure future international success.
He stressed that the administration cannot distance itself from the responsibility of protecting cricket, describing it as a national duty to support and uplift the game.
Officials say the ongoing dialogue with the ICC is also designed to ensure that Sri Lanka avoids any risk of suspension from international cricket.
