A rising political force in Tamil Nadu is triggering regional concerns, as Thalapathy Vijay’s manifesto signals bold moves that could reshape India–Sri Lanka relations and alter the balance of power across the Palk Strait.
The leader of India’s TVK party and South Indian superstar Thalapathy Vijay has officially unveiled his election manifesto, drawing widespread attention across both India and Sri Lanka as political tensions and regional implications begin to surface.
According to Indian media reports, the manifesto was released ahead of the Tamil Nadu state election scheduled to take place on the 23rd, positioning Vijay as a serious contender in the evolving political landscape.
Through the manifesto, Vijay has stated that he will push the Indian central government to grant citizenship to Sri Lankan refugees currently living in India, while also advocating strongly for the rights and protections of Tamil people living in Sri Lanka.
Thalapathy Vijay has further emphasized in his policy framework that he intends to reaffirm the rights of Indian fishermen to carry out fishing activities freely in the waters surrounding the Katchatheevu Island area, a long-standing and sensitive issue between the two nations.
Political analysts have already predicted that Vijay’s TVK party could secure a significant share of votes in the upcoming Tamil Nadu election, creating a powerful challenge to M.K. Stalin’s DMK party as well as the AIADMK, once led by former Chief Minister Jayalalithaa.
Analysts also point out that even if Vijay’s party does not secure an outright majority, there remains a strong possibility that a Tamil Nadu government could be formed with the backing and influence of his party, potentially reshaping regional political dynamics.
