Fake IGP email blackmail network sparks STF cyber probe as police warn the public not to reply, pay money, or click suspicious links.
Fake IGP email blackmail activities have triggered a cyber investigation after a fraudulent network allegedly used the name of Sri Lanka’s Inspector General of Police.
The Police Special Task Force’s Cyber Security and Open Source Investigation Unit has launched the investigation following information received about the cyber threat and blackmail email operation.
According to police, the network had been operating using the fake name of the Inspector General of Police.
During the investigation, information was uncovered through the Cyber Crime Coordination Centre of the Sri Lanka Police regarding blackmail emails sent using the IGP’s name and a forged signature.
Authorities have observed that such activities could cause serious damage to the reputation of the Sri Lanka Police and weaken public trust in the institution.
The Sri Lanka Police has therefore issued a warning to the public regarding suspicious and fraudulent emails sent using the names of officials.
Police urged the public not to panic unnecessarily if they receive such messages.
They also advised people not to reply to those emails or pay any money demanded by the fraudsters.
The public has further been warned not to click on any links contained in such emails.
Police said that if anyone receives information regarding such a crime, they should immediately inform the nearest police station.
They may also contact the Computer Crime Investigation Division of the Sri Lanka Police or the Police Special Task Force.
The Sri Lanka Police stated that it is taking maximum possible action to apprehend those involved in the fraud.
Police also requested the public to act with extreme caution and vigilance to ensure their safety and security.
