Colombia topped Group K after an entertaining 0-0 draw with Portugal in Miami, with both teams advancing to the World Cup round of 32 after an open but goalless contest.
Colombia entered the match with six points and qualification already secured after wins over Uzbekistan and DR Congo. Portugal, on four points, were also well placed after drawing with DR Congo and thrashing Uzbekistan. The match therefore decided first place and the shape of the knockout path.
Colombia started strongly. Luis Díaz and Jhon Arias pressed Portugal’s defence, while James Rodríguez and Richard Ríos tried to move the ball quickly through midfield. Portugal initially looked stretched, with Cristiano Ronaldo isolated during the opening exchanges.
The hydration break helped Portugal settle. Bruno Fernandes began to find space between the lines and forced Camilo Vargas into an excellent reflex save. Pedro Neto also carried threat, giving Portugal more direct movement on the break.
The second half became end-to-end despite the heat and humidity. Colombia continued to push for the win that would underline their status as group leaders, while Portugal searched for the goal that would allow them to leapfrog the South Americans.
The biggest late moment belonged to Colombia. Davinson Sánchez appeared to have scored near the end, sparking celebrations, but the goal was ruled out for offside by the narrowest of margins. The decision preserved the goalless scoreline and left the standings unchanged.
Portugal had moments of their own, but could not turn territory into a decisive finish. Ronaldo remained competitive, repeatedly trying to find space against Colombia’s centre-backs, but the final pass rarely arrived cleanly.
For Colombia, the draw completed an unbeaten group stage and confirmed first place with seven points. Néstor Lorenzo’s side will face Ghana in Kansas City, but the coach warned that missed chances could become more costly in the knockout rounds.
Portugal finished second with five points and will face Croatia in Toronto. Roberto Martínez’s side leave the group having recovered from an uncertain start, but the draw showed they still need sharper finishing against organised opponents.
The result may not have produced goals, but it served both teams. Colombia earned the group crown, Portugal secured progression, and the round-of-32 bracket gained two dangerous contenders.
