The Devinuwara Perahera Kavadi segment has been removed following intelligence warnings over security threats linked to organized criminal gangs.
The Devinuwara Perahera Kavadi segment has been removed from this year’s annual procession following intelligence-based security assessments warning of potential threats to public safety.
The 769th annual Esala Maha Perahera of the Devinuwara Upulvan Sri Vishnu Maha Devale will proceed without the traditional Kavadi dance after authorities decided to remove the item from the programme.
The decision follows a written recommendation made by Acting Inspector General of Police Priyantha Weerasuriya to the Matara District Secretary. Acting on that recommendation, Matara District Secretary Vandana Thilakaratne informed the Devinuwara Basnayake Nilame in writing that the Kavadi dance should be omitted from this year’s procession.
Authorities based the decision on intelligence assessments submitted by the Chief of National Intelligence, the State Intelligence Service, the Police Special Branch, and the Senior Deputy Inspector General of Police in charge of the Southern Province.
According to the intelligence reports, a dispute has emerged between organized criminal gangs over the selection of Kavadi troupes scheduled to perform during the perahera. The reports further indicate that certain parties have allegedly made serious threats connected to the issue.
With thousands of devotees and visitors expected to gather for the grand perahera on July 28, police have taken precautionary measures to reduce any possible threat to public safety.
Officials believe removing the Kavadi segment is a preventive step aimed at ensuring the religious festival can proceed peacefully without exposing participants and spectators to unnecessary risk.
The Devinuwara Esala Maha Perahera is one of Sri Lanka’s oldest and most significant religious processions, drawing large crowds from across the country each year. This year’s event will continue with its remaining traditional rituals and ceremonial items despite the omission of the Kavadi dance.
Authorities have not announced any further changes to the programme and are expected to implement heightened security arrangements throughout the festival.
