Welikada prisoner escape triggers a manhunt after a detainee changed clothes and allegedly fled on a prison guard’s Rs.150,000 motorcycle.
A Welikada prisoner escape has triggered a joint manhunt after a detainee allegedly fled the prison premises on a motorcycle belonging to a prison guard.
Prison authorities and police have launched a wide investigation into the escape, which occurred on August 25.
The escaped detainee is a 45-year-old resident of the Marawila, Natthandiya, Madagoda area.
According to prison sources, the incident occurred while detainees were carrying out cleaning work at the prison holiday bungalow.
Three detainees had been assigned to clean the bungalow. However, the prison guard supervising them reportedly went to his official residence for lunch.
The detainee then allegedly removed the prison jumper he was wearing and changed into a sarong available inside the holiday bungalow.
He subsequently took the guard’s motorcycle, valued at approximately Rs. 150,000. The motorcycle had reportedly been left parked with its key.
The detainee then allegedly rode through the main prison gate and escaped towards Leslie Ranagala Mawatha.
When the guard returned, he discovered that both one detainee and his motorcycle were missing.
He then lodged a complaint with the Borella Police.
Prison officials and Borella Police have now launched a special operation to locate and arrest the escaped detainee as the investigation into the Welikada prisoner escape continues.
