Deputy Minister Nalin Hewage has responded to the criticism he’s faced after a slip of the tongue during a National People’s Power (NPP) rally held in Galle, saying the reaction to his minor mistake has been blown out of proportion.
Speaking at another NPP public meeting, Hewage admitted that he made a small verbal misstep during a lengthy speech on Sri Lanka’s economic collapse. “I made one small mistake,” he said, “but does that mean I should be attacked like this?”
He added that in a long and passionate address about the country’s financial downfall, it’s natural for such lapses to occur. Hewage emphasized that while he takes responsibility for the error, the scale of backlash he’s received is unfair.
The minister also reminded the public to judge politicians on the merit of their entire message—not just a few mistaken words.
