Authorities have initiated a formal investigation into allegations that a National People’s Power MP from Kalutara District verbally threatened a police sergeant attached to the Welipenna Police.
The incident reportedly stems from the sergeant’s arrest of a suspect involved in an illegal liquor operation. The MP in question, Sanjeewa Ranasinghe, allegedly berated the officer over the phone and threatened to have him transferred to Vavuniya.
According to a complaint lodged by the sergeant with his Officer-in-Charge (OIC), the MP obtained the sergeant’s mobile number from the OIC and then made a call during which he used harsh language and accused the officer of filing false cases. The MP also reportedly demanded the officer’s personal details and warned him of disciplinary repercussions.
The OIC has documented the incident in the official police information book, including the phone conversation and subsequent complaint by the sergeant.
Speaking at the weekly Cabinet briefing, Minister and Cabinet Spokesman Nalinda Jayatissa confirmed that a probe is underway and assured the public that “the truth will be revealed soon.”
The police have also confirmed that a report has been requested from the Welipenna OIC and that a formal inquiry is now being conducted by an Assistant Superintendent of Police.
