As Israel-Iran tensions escalate, Sri Lanka steps up security for Israeli and Iranian tourists across key hotspots. Over 16,000 have visited the island in 2025, prompting enhanced safety measures and diplomatic monitoring.
Sri Lanka has tightened security for Israeli and Iranian tourists as tensions in the Middle East flare, with officials assuring that precautionary measures are already in place to protect both citizens and foreign nationals.
Public Security Minister Ananda Wijepala confirmed that enhanced security protocols have been deployed across key tourist zones. “We have provided security to Israeli nationals in Sri Lanka,” he said, adding that the government is committed to maintaining peace and stability during this volatile global period.
The move comes as the number of Israeli and Iranian visitors continues to rise. According to the Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority (SLTDA), 10,899 tourists from Israel arrived in the country between January and June 18, 2025. In comparison, 5,782 tourists from Iran visited during the first five months of the year. These figures place Sri Lanka as a favored destination for tourists from both countries despite ongoing geopolitical conflict.
In response to the recent escalation in Gaza and the broader Israel-Iran confrontation, Sri Lanka Police have increased surveillance and protection around Chabad houses Jewish religious and cultural centers scattered across the island frequented by Israeli tourists and residents. Additionally, heightened security has been extended to Israeli-favored locations like Arugam Bay, a top surfing destination.
Authorities emphasized that all potential threats to foreign nationals are being continuously assessed, with rapid response capabilities ready to be deployed if necessary.
Minister Wijepala also stated that the Foreign Ministry is actively engaged in diplomatic efforts to ensure the safety of Sri Lankan citizens currently residing in Iran and Israel.
Globally, the situation has triggered alerts from major governments. The U.S. Department of State issued a Worldwide Caution Security Alert on Sunday, warning American citizens abroad to remain vigilant. The alert cited disruptions to travel and airspace closures across the Middle East, as well as potential anti-American demonstrations.
Despite the climate of caution, tourism to Sri Lanka remains robust. Over 30,000 U.S. tourists have arrived since January 2025, with 2,202 visiting in June alone, according to SLTDA data. Officials continue to monitor developments closely while assuring the public and international visitors that all necessary safety measures are in place.
