South African Man Sentenced to Life in Sri Lanka for Drug Offenses at Katunayake Airport
A South African national has been sentenced to life imprisonment by the Negombo High Court for drug-related offenses, following his arrest at Sri Lanka’s Katunayake Bandaranaike International Airport in 2021.
The sentencing was delivered on June 25 after the accused pleaded guilty to all three charges filed against him: possession, trafficking, and importation of a dangerous narcotic substance.
The Attorney General’s indictment detailed that the suspect was apprehended while attempting to smuggle illicit drugs into Sri Lanka through the international airport. Following a lengthy investigation and legal proceedings, High Court Judge Kavindra Nanayakkara handed down a life sentence for each charge.
However, the court ruled that all three life sentences would be served concurrently, meaning the defendant will serve one life term in total.
This ruling marks one of the strictest penalties imposed under Sri Lanka’s stringent drug laws and underscores the government’s zero-tolerance stance on international drug trafficking.
