Money printing has exceeded Rs.2.1 trillion, Keerthi Thennakoon says, citing Central Bank data on broad money supply growth.
Money printing in Sri Lanka has exceeded Rs.2.1 trillion, according to a revelation made by Rajith Keerthi Thennakoon.
The Human Rights Centre of Sri Lanka says the broad money supply of the Central Bank of Sri Lanka has crossed Rs.2.1 trillion.
The organization points out that, as a result, currency in circulation has increased by Rs.303,956 million in the last 17 months alone.
Issuing a statement under the letterhead of the Human Rights Centre of Sri Lanka, its Executive Director Rajith Keerthi Thennakoon revealed the figures today (24).
The statement analyzed data from the Weekly Economic Indicators published by the Central Bank of Sri Lanka.
The comparison was based on the reports dated March 28, 2025, and May 22, 2026.
According to the statement, broad money supply stood at Rs.14,439.1 billion by January 2025.
By March 2026, it had increased to Rs.16,585.7 billion.
Accordingly, the statement says money supply expanded by Rs.2,146.1 billion, or Rs.2.1 trillion, within just 15 months.
Thennakoon also revealed how the Central Bank had been creating money through the expansion of broad money supply, known technically as M2b.
This process, the statement said, is commonly described as money printing.
The Human Rights Centre of Sri Lanka said its full statement sets out the details of this increase in money supply.
