Easter investigations face alleged political obstruction, CID tells court, naming Wimal Weerawansa, Udaya Gammampila, and Dilith Jayaweera.
The Easter investigations are being obstructed by a group linked to politics, including Udaya Gammampila, Wimal Weerawansa, and Dilith Jayaweera, the Criminal Investigation Department informed the Colombo Magistrate’s Court today.
The CID made this submission through a motion filed before Colombo Magistrate Prasanna Amarasinha. The department also informed court that former State Intelligence Chief Suresh Salle, who is currently being held under CID detention orders, had been admitted to the Colombo National Hospital.
During the court proceedings, CID investigating officers stated that suspect Suresh Salle is behaving in a manner prejudicial to the ongoing investigations into the Easter Sunday attack.
The officers further revealed that activities harmful to the investigation are allegedly being carried out with the support of political figures, including Udaya Gammampila, Wimal Weerawansa, and Dilith Jayaweera.
According to the CID, there is reasonable suspicion that this systematic process is being implemented with the objective of preventing the disclosure of the still-undisclosed political background behind the Easter Sunday terrorist attack.
The submission places fresh focus on the politically sensitive nature of the Easter probe, as investigators continue to examine whether external influence is being used to disrupt or delay the uncovering of key facts connected to the attack.
