Sarana Gunawardena has been sentenced to prison after the Colombo High Court found the former Deputy Minister guilty of several corruption charges linked to losses caused to the Government.
The Colombo High Court today convicted Gunawardena in four separate cases filed against him and sentenced him to four years of rigorous imprisonment in each case.
The court also imposed a fine of Rs. 1.8 million.
The judgment was delivered by Colombo High Court Judge Mohamed Mihail in a case filed by the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption.
Gunawardena had served as Chairman of the Development Lotteries Board in 2006.
According to the case, vehicles had been obtained on a rental basis for the use of the institution during his tenure.
Investigations revealed that Gunawardena had misused government funds and deliberately caused financial loss to the state institution.
Following those findings, the Bribery Commission filed legal action, resulting in today’s conviction and sentence.
