Switzerland vs Canada ended 2-1 as Johan Manzambi and Ruben Vargas secured the Group B crown, while both teams advanced to the World Cup knockouts.
Switzerland won Group B and secured a round-of-32 fixture in the same city after second-half goals from Ruben Vargas and Johan Manzambi delivered a 2-1 victory over World Cup co-host Canada in Vancouver.
Both teams entered the final group match on four points, with qualification effectively within reach. Canada’s superior goal difference meant that a draw would have given Jesse Marsch’s side first place, while Switzerland needed victory to claim the group and remain at BC Place for the opening knockout round.
The first half reflected those calculations. Neither side wanted to make the mistake that would reshape the draw, and the teams produced only three attempts between them. The main flashpoint came when Swiss captain Granit Xhaka and Canada striker Cyle Larin clashed during an argument over a quickly taken free kick, earning both players yellow cards.
Switzerland emerged from the interval with far greater purpose and needed less than a minute to take the lead. Manzambi drove the move forward, and Vargas finished the attack in the 46th minute, punishing a Canada side that had failed to match the visitors’ intensity immediately after the restart.
The Swiss doubled their advantage 11 minutes later. Manzambi, one of the tournament’s most impressive young performers, found space to deliver an emphatic finish and record his third goal of the competition. Canada, who had needed only a draw to top the section, suddenly faced a two-goal deficit.
Marsch turned to his bench, and Promise David gave the home crowd hope in the 76th minute, scoring almost immediately after entering the contest. His finish transformed the atmosphere inside the packed stadium and encouraged Canada to attack with the urgency that had been missing earlier.
The closing stages became increasingly frantic. Canada sent more bodies forward, used the width of the pitch and forced Switzerland to defend deeper. Gregor Kobel responded with important late saves, preserving the lead as the hosts searched for the equaliser that would have returned them to first place.
Manzambi’s goal and involvement in the opener made him the outstanding attacking influence, while Vargas supplied the crucial first strike. Xhaka and Remo Freuler helped Switzerland regain control after a subdued opening half, and Kobel provided the security required when Canada mounted their final assault.
Canada’s defeat extended their wait for a World Cup victory over European opposition, but it did not prevent a historic achievement. After drawing with Bosnia and Herzegovina and routing Qatar 6-0, the co-hosts finished second on four points and advanced beyond the group stage for the first time.
Switzerland completed Group B unbeaten with seven points. They will remain in Vancouver for a round-of-32 match on July 2 against one of the qualifying third-placed teams. Canada will travel to the Los Angeles area for their first knockout fixture on June 28 against the runner-up from Group A.
The scorers, key incidents, final standings and knockout destinations were confirmed by Reuters and independent match reporting.
