The Tamil Nadu political crisis has intensified after allegations of a bribery plot to topple Vijay’s TVK government triggered arrests and political clashes.
The Tamil Nadu political crisis has intensified after allegations surfaced of a major conspiracy to overthrow the government led by actor-turned-politician Joseph Vijay, leader of the Tamizhaga Vetri Kazhagam (TVK), triggering arrests, political accusations and growing uncertainty over the state’s political future.
The latest controversy centres on claims that a large-scale operation involving money and the alleged purchase of legislators was launched to destabilize the TVK administration.
According to Indian media reports, an advisory firm allegedly offered TVK MLA N. Elaiyaraja a bribe of Rs. 350 million.
The alleged objective was to secure support for a motion against the Speaker while persuading 15 TVK legislators to submit their resignation letters simultaneously, thereby stripping the government of its legislative majority.
According to the complaint, Chennai police have arrested three individuals in connection with the alleged conspiracy. One of those arrested has reportedly been identified as a close associate of DMK MLA Senthil Balaji and his brother, Ashok. Police have also registered a First Information Report (FIR) against Ashok.
Tamil Nadu Political Crisis Sparks Party Clash
The allegations have triggered an intense political confrontation between Tamil Nadu’s two established Dravidian parties and the relatively new TVK administration.
TVK leaders claim their legislators have been subjected to sustained political pressure from the DMK over the past 40 days.
Senior TVK leader and Tamil Nadu Minister C.T.R. Nirmal Kumar told Indian media that the DMK had now been “caught red-handed” over an alleged MLA-buying operation. He further accused former Chief Minister M.K. Stalin and Opposition Leader Udhayanidhi Stalin of masterminding the alleged conspiracy.
The DMK and AIADMK have firmly rejected those allegations.
Both parties argue that Chief Minister Vijay has failed to deliver on his election promises and is attempting to divert public attention from his government’s shortcomings by making what they describe as baseless accusations.
AIADMK General Secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami (EPS) also criticized TVK through a post on his X account.
He accused the ruling party of engaging in political manoeuvres by forming alliances with parties it had previously criticized while allegedly purchasing legislators from rival parties instead of focusing on public welfare.
Political Analysts Watch Vijay’s Leadership Test
Political analysts across India have focused closely on the implications of the unfolding controversy.
Joseph Vijay’s emergence in Tamil Nadu politics has challenged the long-standing dominance of both the DMK and AIADMK.
Media analysts argue that the current controversy extends beyond an alleged bribery attempt and reflects a broader struggle between established political forces and a newly elected administration seeking to consolidate power.
Although allegations of legislators being lured with financial incentives are not new in Indian state politics, commentators note that the reported offer of Rs. 350 million to a single MLA illustrates the extraordinary intensity of the current political battle.
Government Stability Under Fresh Scrutiny
The controversy presents one of the biggest political challenges faced by Chief Minister Vijay since assuming office.
Political observers believe the future stability of his administration will depend on keeping TVK legislators united, successfully responding to opposition pressure and continuing to implement public welfare programmes promised during the election campaign.
The crisis now carries implications well beyond a dispute between political parties.
The future of the TVK government, along with the broader political direction of Tamil Nadu, is likely to depend on the outcome of the ongoing police investigation and any legal proceedings that follow in the coming days.
