USA beat Bosnia 2-0 despite Folarin Balogun’s red card, reaching the World Cup last 16 and setting up Belgium next in Seattle.
USA beat Bosnia 2-0 with 10 men to keep their World Cup dream alive, ending a 24-year wait for a men’s knockout-stage victory.
The co-hosts entered the round of 32 under major pressure. After winning Group D, Mauricio Pochettino’s team were expected to handle a Bosnia and Herzegovina side playing its first World Cup knockout match. However, Bosnia had already shown toughness. Therefore, the USA knew the night could turn dangerous if they lost control.
How USA beat Bosnia After Fast Start
The Americans opened with purpose. Christian Pulisic returned to the starting line-up and quickly lifted the crowd with direct runs at Bosnia’s defence. The USA passed sharply, attacked in waves and tried to push Sergej Barbarez’s side deep.
Bosnia stayed disciplined. Barbarez set his team up in a compact shape, blocked central routes and looked for long balls toward Edin Džeko. The veteran striker forced an early save from Matt Freese, but Bosnia struggled to build steady pressure.
The USA thought they had broken through earlier, only for goals by Folarin Balogun and Pulisic to be ruled out in a frustrating first half. Still, the hosts kept pressing and finally struck close to halftime.
Balogun reacted fastest inside the area and swept home a loose ball to put the United States ahead. It was his third goal of the tournament. At that stage, it looked like the finish that would calm American nerves.
Red Card Forces Hosts To Dig Deep
Instead, the game tightened after the break. Balogun received a red card for a serious foul on Tarik Muharemović, a decision that stunned the striker and forced the USA to protect a narrow lead with 10 men.
Bosnia pushed forward after the dismissal, but the American defence held firm. Tim Ream and Chris Richards organised the back line, while the midfield ran tirelessly to close space and deny Bosnia clear shooting chances.
The decisive moment arrived late. Malik Tillman stood over a free kick and produced a superb finish to make it 2-0, setting off wild celebrations in Santa Clara. The goal gave the USA breathing room and ended Bosnia’s hopes of a comeback.
Pochettino praised his team’s fight and togetherness, while Pulisic said the win demanded a complete team effort. Bosnia leave with pride after reaching this stage, but they lacked enough attacking threat to trouble the hosts consistently.
The way USA beat Bosnia mattered. The United States now face Belgium in Seattle on July 6. Balogun’s suspension creates a concern, but this victory showed the co-hosts can win through resilience as well as attacking flair.
