COLOMBO, Sri Lanka — Authorities sealed expired sugar stock weighing more than 4.2 million kilograms at a warehouse complex in Peliyagoda after uncovering an alleged plan to move it into the market, according to a Daily Mirror report.
Expired Sugar Stock Probe In Peliyagoda
The Consumer Affairs Authority and the Walana Central Anti-Corruption Task Force carried out the joint operation. During the raid, officers found about 85,000 sugar bags, each weighing 50 kilograms.
Investigators said a prominent sugar importer had kept the stock in storage for up to five years. They alleged the expired sugar stock was being mixed and repackaged with unexpired sugar before distribution to the market at prices far below standard rates.
The Consumer Affairs Authority sealed the facility while officers continue their probe into possible food safety and consumer protection violations. The suspects involved remain on bail as investigators examine the alleged scheme and its impact on consumers.
