Arjuna Mahendran name change claims have been rejected by the former Central Bank Governor, who says reports that he adopted another identity are completely false.
Mahendran has challenged a public statement made by a Government minister who claimed that he had changed his name.
He has also sent a letter requesting that the statement be corrected.
The letter carries the signature “Lakshman Arjuna Mahendran” and includes an address in Singapore.
Public Security Minister Ananda Wijepala had earlier said the Criminal Investigation Department received information that the former Governor had changed his name to “Harjan Alexander.”
The Minister made the statement while referring to efforts by Sri Lankan authorities to bring Mahendran back to the country in connection with legal proceedings over the 2015 Central Bank bond case.
Wijepala also said the Government was examining alternative legal routes because of difficulties involved in extraditing Mahendran from Singapore.
Sri Lankan authorities continue to seek Mahendran’s return for proceedings connected to the 2015 bond case.
However, his written denial has now created a direct contradiction over the Arjuna Mahendran name change claim and the identity information cited by the Government.
