Ratnapura District MP Hesha Withanage of the Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) has introduced a groundbreaking private member’s motion to Parliament, seeking to drastically reduce the privileges, allowances, and facilities currently enjoyed by Members of Parliament.
During a press briefing in Colombo, Withanage stressed that many MPs, including those affiliated with the National People’s Power (NPP), do not need luxury residences in upscale neighborhoods like Cinnamon Gardens. He proposed leasing these properties to private entities, with the revenue directed towards Mahapola scholarships, which support university students across Sri Lanka.
Withanage criticized the excessive perks provided to MPs, arguing that politicians must reconnect with the grassroots, especially as many of them started their careers without such privileges. He highlighted the disconnect between MPs living in lavish conditions and the daily struggles faced by ordinary citizens.
The motion also addresses broader reforms in the financial management of Parliament, aiming to cut unnecessary spending, reduce the number of luxury vehicles allocated to MPs, and curb expenses related to foreign trips. This move aligns with growing public dissatisfaction over political privileges amidst Sri Lanka’s economic challenges.
The proposal has sparked significant public interest and is set to be the first motion debated in the Tenth Parliament. If passed, it could mark a shift towards increased transparency and fiscal responsibility in Sri Lankan politics.
