Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP) General Secretary and former MP Sagara Kariyawasam has claimed that the biggest and most unaccountable fraud of the century has occurred under the current government through a massive container release scandal.
Speaking at a press conference at the SLPP headquarters, Kariyawasam alleged that a large stock of containers was released from the port without undergoing proper inspection, raising serious concerns about what might have been inside them. He warned that the scale of this fraud could be immeasurable and demanded urgent transparency from the authorities.
Referring to a statement made in Parliament by MP D.V. Chanaka, Kariyawasam noted that carcinogenic water treatment chemicals had been imported into Sri Lanka under the guise of limestone for water purification. He questioned how these hazardous materials could have entered the country without proper testing and whether there was a connection between this unregulated importation and the unauthorized release of containers.
He further demanded that the government disclose the identities of the businessmen involved in the container release, along with any politicians backing them. Kariyawasam criticized the authorities for failing to provide any details on the container owners and suggested that the lack of transparency indicated an intentional cover-up.
Concluding his remarks, Kariyawasam urged the government and President Anura Kumara Dissanayake to publicly reveal those responsible for this massive fraud, emphasizing that the people of Sri Lanka deserve to know the truth.
