A forceful protest by National People’s Power lawmakers has reignited the debate on political ethics, gender respect, and the treatment of women leaders in Sri Lanka’s opposition politics.
A protest movement targeting the opposition was held today with the participation of several National People’s Power parliamentarians. The demonstration was organized under the theme “Let’s condemn the opposition that insults women,” drawing attention to what MPs described as a growing pattern of gender based political attacks.
Parliamentarians Nilanthi Kottachchi and Oshani Umanga were among those who actively took part in the protest. Speaking at the event, MPs stated that the opposition is deliberately insulting women leaders as a strategy to gain political advantage. They stressed that such actions undermine democratic values and reinforce harmful attitudes toward women in leadership roles.
The protest highlighted the need for political accountability, respect for women in public life, and ethical conduct within Parliament. Participants called on all political parties to reject misogyny and engage in issue based politics rather than personal and gendered attacks.
