Sri Lankan woman Bhagya Solanga Arachchi has made history after being selected for a command role in Italy’s Carabinieri police force.
A Sri Lankan woman has made history in Italy after being selected for a command position in the Italian Carabinieri police force for the first time, according to foreign media reports.
The remarkable achievement belongs to 23-year-old Bhagya Solanga Arachchi, a young woman of Sri Lankan origin who has become the first Sri Lankan-born female to rise to such a responsible and high-ranking position within the Italian police service.
Her parents, Mr. Henry Solanga Arachchi and her mother, originally lived on St. Anna Road in Wennappuwa before migrating to Italy for employment in 1982. They now reside in Milan with their daughter.
Bhagya, who graduated in commerce from an Italian university, is also known for her strong language skills. She is reportedly fluent in Sinhala, English, Italian, and several other languages, making her a recognised polyglot.
After applying for a senior rank in the Italian police as a graduate, she reportedly performed exceptionally well in a highly competitive series of examinations and intelligence tests, passing with outstanding results.
Authorities later promoted her to a command position in the Carabinieri police force because of the exceptional skills, discipline, and commitment she displayed during her police training.
In addition to standard police training, Bhagya has also successfully completed extremely rigorous combat exercises. According to Italian media reports, she is approximately six feet tall.
Her achievement as a young Sri Lankan woman holding a senior role in a premier security force of a foreign nation has drawn strong praise from the Sri Lankan community living in Italy.
