Hanif Yusuf Washington visit draws attention after his resignation letter, as he meets Julie Chung and US economic officials.
The Hanif Yusuf Washington visit has become a fresh political talking point after the Western Province Governor, who recently submitted his resignation letter, travelled to the United States for high-level economic discussions.
In recent days, major political attention was drawn to Hanif Yusuf after he submitted his resignation letter to President Anura Kumara Dissanayake. However, until a new Governor is appointed, Hanif Yusuf continues to function in the position.
Reports later emerged that he had left Sri Lanka and travelled directly to Washington, USA, creating further discussion in political circles.
However, this was not merely a private visit. Hanif Yusuf travelled to Washington in his capacity as the President’s “Special Envoy on Foreign Direct Investment.”
During the visit, he met US Deputy Secretary of State for Economic Affairs Jacob Helberg and held a high-level discussion aimed at strengthening bilateral economic ties between Sri Lanka and the United States.
The trip also included another notable meeting. Hanif Yusuf met Julie Chung, the former popular US Ambassador to Sri Lanka, who is described as an old friend of his.
When Julie Chung saw that her old friend had arrived in Washington, she took a warm photograph with Hanif Yusuf and his Senior Advisor, Aritha Wickramasinghe, and posted it on her X, formerly Twitter, account with a positive caption.
“Great to catch up with Governor Hanif Yusuf, Special Envoy for Foreign Investment for Sri Lanka, and his Senior Advisor Aritha Wickramasinghe in Washington, D.C. I continue to support strong ties, including trade and investment opportunities, between our two countries,” she wrote.
Therefore, even after submitting his resignation, Governor Hanif Yusuf’s continued interest in attracting investment to Sri Lanka has led to this diplomatic mission to the US. His meetings in Washington, especially with old friends and senior officials, have now become a new subject of discussion in the political world.
