Suresh Sallay health concerns deepen as his lawyer seeks urgent hospital care, legal access, and facilities to prepare his last will.
The Suresh Sallay health crisis has raised serious concern after his lawyer urgently requested facilities for legal matters, including the preparation of his last will, while he remains detained by the Criminal Investigation Department.
Retired Major General Suresh Sallay is currently being held by the CID under the Prevention of Terrorism Act in connection with investigations into the Easter Sunday terrorist attack. His lawyer says his health condition has now deteriorated to a critically serious level.
Lawyer Asith Siriwardena sent an urgent letter today, the 07th, to the Director of the Criminal Investigation Department, Senior Superintendent of Police G.S. Abeysekara, regarding the matter.
According to the lawyer, when Sallay’s wife, son, and brother visited him today, they observed that his physical condition had reached a critical stage. He was reportedly unable to come forward without the physical assistance of two officers.
Sallay is said to have informed his family that he has refused to take food, water, saline, and medication, and that he believes his death is near.
He has also reportedly requested that arrangements be made to donate his eyes after death. In addition, he has asked that his lawyer be summoned immediately to prepare his last will and other legal documents.
Lawyer Asith Siriwardena has pointed out that the government bears full responsibility for protecting the life and health of any person held in detention. He further states that, under the current circumstances, Sallay does not possess the mental capacity to make sound decisions, and that there is a severe and immediate threat to his life.
The letter also warns that if any harm or death occurs to Sallay despite these warnings, the officers responsible for making decisions in relation to him will be held personally accountable.
The lawyer’s requests include the immediate admission of Sallay to a government or private hospital equipped with the required medical facilities.
He has also requested an urgent examination by independent specialist doctors, including psychiatrists.
The letter further asks that Sallay’s lawyers and family be given a reasonable opportunity to meet him without delay.
It also requests that a written report be provided immediately on the steps taken to ensure his health, safety, and protection while in detention.
Lawyer Siriwardena has emphasized that if these requests are not fulfilled, the letter will be used as official notice for future domestic and international legal action.
