Sri Lanka Rugby is under heavy fire after a visa failure forced the Tuskers to forfeit their Asia Rugby clash against South Korea, handing opponents a 20-0 walkover and costing millions in wasted travel bookings. The off-field collapse has triggered ministerial blame, parliamentary scrutiny and fresh anger across the rugby community.
Colombo – Sri Lanka’s sports minister has leveled tackling accusations of “gross negligence” against the country’s rugby governing body following an administrative knock-on that forced the national team to default a major international test match.
Sports Minister Sunil Kumara Gamage announced strict disciplinary action against Sri Lanka Rugby (SLR), after the national team, known as the Tuskers, failed to secure travel visas for their scheduled Asia Rugby Emirates Men’s Championship clash against South Korea.
With the team grounded in Colombo, regional governing body Asia Rugby issued a clinical, 20-0 walkover victory to South Korea, leaving Sri Lanka’s championship hopes dead in the rucks.
Gamage completely booted away any accountability from the government, telling reporters that the “visa fiasco” was entirely an unforced error by domestic rugby executives who attempted to clear the administrative hurdle far too late.
“The Federation cannot request for a visa on Monday if the team is to travel on Wednesday,” Gamage said.
“This is the Federation’s negligence. The buck stops with them.”
The operational collapse cost SLR an estimated 5.5 million rupees ($18,000 USD) in wasted flight bookings.
In a defensive statement, SLR blamed structural friction, stating that a breakdown in communication between their Men’s Sevens and Men’s Fifteens programs led to late squad alterations and a bottlenecked approval process.
For a team that had put up a fierce fight in a narrow 15-14 loss to heavyweights Hong Kong China just days prior, the administrative default drew intense scrutiny in Parliament and left the rugby community mourning an avoidable, off-field defeat.
The administrative breakdown unfolded rapidly over the course of a week, turning a highly anticipated international test match into a default defeat.
