Stephen Eustáquio scores late as Canada World Cup last 16 hopes become reality with a tense 1-0 win over South Africa.
Canada World Cup last 16 hopes became reality after Stephen Eustáquio scored deep into stoppage time to seal a tense 1-0 win over South Africa in the opening Round of 32 match.
The knockout stage began at Los Angeles Stadium with both nations walking into unfamiliar ground. Canada had never won a World Cup knockout match before. South Africa, meanwhile, had reached beyond the group stage for the first time after their historic Group A campaign.
Canada entered as co-hosts, but not on home soil. Jesse Marsch’s side lost the chance to play this knockout tie in Vancouver after finishing second behind Switzerland in Group B. South Africa arrived with belief after Thapelo Maseko’s winner against South Korea sent Bafana Bafana into the knockouts.
Canada World Cup Last 16 Breakthrough
The early pattern showed the weight of the occasion. Canada controlled more possession and pushed South Africa back. However, Hugo Broos’s side stayed compact, slowed the rhythm, and denied Canada clean space through midfield.
Canada still made the better chances before halftime. Moïse Bombito’s header was cleared close to the line. Tajon Buchanan then followed with an effort that forced another vital defensive intervention. Canada also appealed for a penalty before the break, but the officials allowed play to continue.
South Africa found little attacking flow. Their best moments came in short transitions, but Canada’s defensive line cut out most forward passes before Ronwen Williams’ side could build real pressure. As the match stretched, Bafana Bafana’s lack of speed in attack became more obvious.
Marsch turned to Alphonso Davies in the second half and sent on the returning star to add width, pace, and direct running. Davies gave Canada a sharper edge immediately. Still, South Africa defended with discipline and tried to drag the match toward extra time.
Eustáquio Finds Finish Under Pressure
The decisive moment came two minutes into stoppage time. Alistair Johnston’s long pass caused trouble inside the South African defence. The clearance only dropped near the edge of the penalty area, where Stephen Eustáquio reacted first.
The midfielder stayed composed and drove his finish into the bottom corner. The strike broke South Africa’s resistance and triggered wild Canadian celebrations.
South Africa had almost no time to answer. After defending bravely for more than 90 minutes, they had to absorb the cruelty of a late knockout punch. Their World Cup ends in disappointment, but also with pride after reaching the knockout stage for the first time.
For Canada, the goal created one of the country’s greatest football moments. Marsch’s side now move into the last 16, where they will face either the Netherlands or Morocco on July 4. The performance was not perfect. But it carried what knockout football demands: patience, belief, and one decisive finish under pressure.
