Cristiano Ronaldo World Cup farewell looms as the Portugal forward confirms 2026 will be his final tournament before Spain clash.
DALLAS, Texas – Cristiano Ronaldo World Cup farewell talk became official Sunday as the Portugal forward confirmed the 2026 tournament will be his last before a critical round-of-16 clash against Spain at Dallas Stadium in Arlington, Texas.
The 41-year-old addressed his future during a packed press conference. He spoke with reflection, but also with the defiance that has shaped more than two decades.
“This will be my last World Cup; God willing tomorrow is not my last game,” Ronaldo said.
Cristiano Ronaldo World Cup Farewell Nears
Now playing in his record-tying sixth World Cup, Ronaldo pushed back against pressure over the one major trophy still missing from his international career. He said his remaining time on the pitch comes from passion, not from any need to secure his legacy.
“I’m not missing anything; God has been generous to me,” Ronaldo said. “I won’t be more Cristiano or less Cristiano if I win the World Cup or not.”
The Al-Nassr forward has scored three goals so far in the tournament. He also took a lighthearted swipe at the media scrutiny that has followed him for decades.
“They’ve tried to kill me for 23 years. There’s no point paying too much attention to it,” Ronaldo said, adding that the criticism ultimately helped him grow.
“Whatever happens tomorrow, I will leave with a clear conscience… because I have given everything to football.”
Ronaldo made his Portugal debut in 2003 as a substitute for Luís Figo before 8,000 fans in Chaves, Portugal. Monday’s knockout match against Spain now puts the Cristiano Ronaldo World Cup story, and perhaps his international career, on the line before an expected crowd of 80,000.
