India Sri Lanka Test series preparations moved into a decisive phase in Colombo on Friday as the visitors began a three-day warm-up match against a Sri Lanka Cricket XI at the Nondescripts Cricket Club Ground.
The fixture is India’s only competitive preparation before the two-Test series begins in Galle on August 15. Sri Lanka XI won the toss and chose to bat, while India faced an early adjustment after captain Shubman Gill missed the opening day.
Gill suffered an impact injury to his right ring finger during practice on Thursday. The BCCI said his absence was precautionary, with the captain remaining under observation by its medical team. KL Rahul took charge for Day 1.
The warm-up match was originally announced as a four-day fixture. However, officials later reduced it to three days, running from August 7 to 9. No public reason was given for the change.
India Sri Lanka Test Series Exposes Spin Concerns
India’s main concern remains their ability to handle spin in conditions expected to favour slow bowling. That issue has become increasingly difficult to ignore after recent struggles against spin at home.
Before leaving for Sri Lanka, KL Rahul and Yashasvi Jaiswal held net sessions in Mumbai with a heavy focus on facing different types of spin. Left-arm orthodox, leg-spin and off-spin were all part of their preparation.
India have also taken extra slow-bowling resources to Sri Lanka. Tanush Kotian, Vipraj Nigam, Shivang Kumar and Harsh Dubey travelled as net bowlers, giving the batters access to several spin variations.
The emphasis is understandable. India suffered a 3-0 home Test series defeat to New Zealand in 2024 before losing 2-0 at home to South Africa in 2025. Spin played a decisive role in those setbacks.
During the first Test against South Africa in November 2025, India lost 12 wickets to spin at an average of 13.25 runs per dismissal. Those collapses raised further questions about footwork, shot selection and patience against slow bowling.
Galle is likely to provide another examination. India’s batters will need to judge when to defend, when to use their feet and when to attack before Sri Lanka’s spinners settle into long spells.
Rishabh Pant’s aggressive approach could offer one route to disrupting spin. However, India must also avoid the sudden collapses that have repeatedly changed matches against them.
Warm-Up Match Could Shape India’s Test Combination
The Colombo match also gives head coach Gautam Gambhir an opportunity to examine his preferred balance before the opening Test.
Yashasvi Jaiswal, KL Rahul, Rishabh Pant, Devdutt Padikkal and Dhruv Jurel are among the batting options available. Sai Sudharsan had originally been named in the Test squad subject to fitness clearance and was included among India’s players for the warm-up fixture.
India also have several spin combinations to consider. Ravindra Jadeja and Kuldeep Yadav provide experience, while Manav Suthar and Saransh Jain offer further options.
The performances of those bowlers in Colombo could influence whether India select two or three specialist spinners in Galle.
Sri Lanka XI have several players capable of providing a useful examination. Their squad includes Ramesh Mendis and Dilum Sudeera, with Sonal Dinusha as captain. Fast bowlers Vishwa Fernando and Lahiru Kumara are also involved.
That mix gives India a chance to prepare against both pace and spin before the first Test.
Bumrah Absence Adds Pressure to India Attack
India will play the series without Jasprit Bumrah, who was ruled out because of continuing discomfort from a left knee injury.
Bumrah suffered the injury while fielding during an ODI against England in Cardiff in July. He underwent rehabilitation at the BCCI Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru but did not recover sufficiently for the tour.
Uncapped Jammu and Kashmir fast bowler Auqib Nabi replaced him in the squad.
Nabi earned his first senior India call-up after taking 104 wickets across the previous two Ranji Trophy seasons. He claimed 60 wickets during Jammu and Kashmir’s title-winning 2025-26 campaign. He also toured Sri Lanka with India A earlier this year.
Without Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj and Prasidh Krishna are expected to carry much of the pace responsibility. Nabi and Gurnoor Brar also have an opportunity to push for selection.
India must therefore decide how much pace they need in conditions where spin could become more influential as each Test progresses.
Galle Awaits After Colombo Preparations
The first Test will take place at the Galle International Cricket Stadium from August 15 to 19. The second follows at the Singhalese Sports Club in Colombo from August 23 to 27.
Both matches form part of the ICC World Test Championship 2025-2027 cycle, adding further importance to the series.
For India, the warm-up fixture is more than a routine tour match. It offers the team a chance to assess technique, combinations and confidence before facing Sri Lanka in conditions that should test their batting against spin.
The India Sri Lanka Test series will ultimately be decided by far more than three days of practice in Colombo. Still, how India respond to spin, Bumrah’s absence and Gill’s fitness could shape their prospects before the first ball is bowled in Galle.
