A Kalutara train accident killed a mother and her young relative near Kalutara South station as they travelled to attend a religious event.
KALUTARA, Sri Lanka — A heartbreaking early morning tragedy unfolded on Wednesday (September 16) when a mother and her young relative were struck and killed by a moving train near the Kalutara South railway station.
According to railway officials, the incident occurred at approximately 4:30 AM. A group consisting of a mother, her daughter, and a relative had travelled from Mathugama to catch a train to Anuradhapura, where they intended to take part in a religious event in the sacred city.
While attempting to reach the platform at the Kalutara South railway station, the group walked along the active railway tracks. Tragically, as they proceeded along the tracks, an oncoming train travelling from Maradana towards Galle struck them.
The mother and her relative died at the scene from their injuries.
Their bodies were kept at the Kalutara South railway station pending transfer to the morgue at the Kalutara Teaching Hospital.
Kalutara South Police are conducting further investigations into the tragic accident.
