Aravinda de Silva warrant issued with one for his wife after the couple, who stood as sureties for Priyanka Wijenayake, failed to appear in court.
An Aravinda de Silva warrant was issued on Wednesday along with one for his wife, Priyangi Anushka Wijenayake, by Colombo Fort Magistrate Pasan Amarasena.
The Magistrate issued the warrants when the case involving former SriLankan Airlines CEO Kapila Chandrasena and his wife was taken up before the Colombo Fort Magistrate’s Court.
De Silva and his wife had stood as sureties for Chandrasena’s wife, Priyanka Niyomali Wijenayake. However, the couple failed to appear before court when the matter was called.
Counsel representing them informed court that de Silva’s mother had passed away. Her funeral was scheduled to take place on the same day, preventing them from attending the proceedings.
The Magistrate said the circumstances surrounding their absence should be brought to the court’s attention when an application is made to recall the warrants.
The Aravinda de Silva warrant relates to the couple’s role as sureties and their failure to appear before court. It does not, by itself, indicate that either has been accused of the alleged offences under investigation in the underlying case.
