The Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games have unveiled their full competition schedule, setting the stage for the biggest Olympics in history and delivering a dramatic spotlight on women’s sport from day one.
The LA28 Games will officially open on July 14 and conclude on July 30, marking a packed 17-day global sporting festival. Organizers confirmed that 11,200 athletes will compete across 51 sports and 49 venues, making this edition the largest the world has ever seen.
For the first time in Olympic history, every team sport will include an equal or greater number of women’s teams than men’s teams, with women making up 50.5 percent of all competitors. The Games will launch with unprecedented emphasis on female athletes, including the most women’s finals ever held on a single day.
On July 15, the first full competition day, events begin with the women’s triathlon and continue with a showcase spotlight on the women’s 100 meters. LA28 chief of sport Shana Ferguson said, “We want to come out in these Games with a bang. We want to start day one with a showcase of the fastest females in the world.” This scheduling means athletes will run three 100 meter heats in one day. LA28 chief athlete officer Janet Evans noted that early discussions with athletes were “largely positive,” adding that once presented with the concept, competitors expressed excitement and readiness to train accordingly.
A major change in the 2028 schedule is the flipping of swimming and athletics between weeks. To maximize venue use, SoFi Stadium will host swimming in the second week, while track and field will run in the first week. Evans said the switch allows swimmers to attend the opening ceremony without worrying about next-morning races and will place top athletes in front of crowds of up to 38,000.
July 29 will host the highly anticipated “Super Saturday,” a marathon day featuring 26 finals in 23 sports, with medal matches in basketball, beach volleyball, boxing, cricket, football, swimming, tennis, golf and athletics. Swimming will crown its final champions just before the closing ceremony. The women’s marathon will take place on July 29, followed by the men’s marathon on July 30.
Ticket availability will be massive, with 14 million seats expected to open for purchase. Pricing will be announced later, but officials confirmed that dynamic pricing will not be used. Ferguson added that Olympic and international federation partners worked closely with LA28 to design the final timetable.
Weather played a key role in scheduling decisions, with several events moved to cooler evening hours, including equestrian sessions at Santa Anita. Baseball and softball return to the Olympic lineup, with baseball contests held at Dodger Stadium. Medal games are set for July 19, and the competition begins on July 13, one day before the opening ceremony, to accommodate Major League Baseball players.
Cricket returns to the Olympics after more than 100 years, with the women’s final on July 20 and the men’s final on July 29. Lacrosse also returns, featuring both men’s and women’s finals on July 29. For the first time, American flag football and squash will make their Olympic debut on July 15.
More details about the football tournament, hosted nationwide across the United States, as well as the full Paralympic schedule, will be released later. Ticket registration for the LA28 Olympic Games will begin in January.
