Lionel Messi announces his retirement from international football after 207 Argentina appearances, ending a historic World Cup-winning career.
Lionel Messi has officially announced his retirement from international football, bringing the curtain down on one of the greatest careers in the history of the Argentina national team.
The 39-year-old confirmed his decision on Monday, August 31, ending a remarkable 21-year journey in Argentina colours that included World Cup glory, two Copa América titles and a record-breaking 207 international appearances.
Messi’s final appearance for Argentina came in the 2026 FIFA World Cup final, where the defending champions suffered a heartbreaking 1-0 extra-time defeat to Spain.
Announcing his retirement through an emotional Instagram post, Messi said the decision had been extremely painful but acknowledged that the moment had arrived to allow Argentina’s next generation to take centre stage.
“I’ve given everything I had; I have nothing left to give,” Messi wrote, while expressing his belief that several talented young players were now ready to carry the national team forward.
Messi made his senior Argentina debut in 2005 and went on to score 125 goals in 207 appearances, becoming the country’s record appearance-maker and leading goalscorer.
His international career was initially defined by painful near misses. Argentina lost the 2014 World Cup final to Germany, while defeats in successive Copa América finals led Messi to briefly announce his international retirement in 2016 before reversing the decision.
His fortunes eventually changed dramatically.
Messi captained Argentina to the 2021 Copa América title before achieving the defining moment of his international career by lifting the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar. He followed that triumph by helping Argentina retain the Copa América crown in 2024.
His final attempt to win another World Cup ended against Spain in July 2026.
Messi’s retirement announcement also comes weeks after the death of his father, Jorge Messi, a period which the Argentine star said reinforced his reflections about his future.
Although his Argentina career has ended, Messi has not retired from football entirely and remains a player for Inter Miami in Major League Soccer.
He leaves international football as a World Cup-winning captain and one of Argentina’s most celebrated sporting figures.
