Switzerland creates a Tamil refugee memorial street in Chur to honor four victims of a 1989 racist arson attack.
CHUR, Switzerland: A Tamil refugee memorial has taken shape in Chur, where the local municipality named a new pathway after four Tamil refugees killed in a racially motivated arson attack nearly four decades ago.
The municipal administration of Chur announced that it has named a previously unassigned street “Vier-Lichter-Weg” in German, meaning “Path of Four Lights.” Chur selected the name in collaboration with the Graubünden Tamil Cultural Association to honor the four victims as guiding lights for memory, justice, and community recognition.
The Tamil refugee memorial marks 37 years since the July 2, 1989, tragedy. On that day, an assailant set fire to a local refugee shelter that housed asylum seekers from Sri Lanka. The fatal fire claimed the lives of Kandiah Balamurali, Kandiah Balamugundan, Sathivel Thambiraja, and Devaraja Chinnathambi.
Representatives of the Tamil diaspora welcomed the historic street naming. They described the Swiss local government’s recognition of the victims’ lives and sacrifices as a deeply moving gesture of social justice, remembrance, and community inclusion.
