Sri Lanka clinched victory in the Asian Rugby Division 1 Championship, triumphing over Kazakhstan with a commanding score of 45-7 in the final showdown at Colombo’s Racecourse Stadium.
This significant win propels Sri Lanka to the next echelon of the Asian Rugby competition, marking a remarkable achievement for the island nation as it secures its inaugural test rugby final victory since its suspension from the sport a few years ago.
The climactic match of the Asia Rugby Division 1 Championship 2024 unfolded under the floodlights of the Racecourse Stadium in Colombo on Saturday evening (May 04) at 7:00 p.m.
Initially slated to feature Sri Lanka, Qatar, and Pakistan, this year’s Asia Rugby Men’s Division 1 encountered a setback when Pakistan was compelled to withdraw from the competition.
Similarly, the Asia Rugby Men’s Division 2 event faced a reduction in participating teams, with only Kazakhstan and India remaining in contention after Iran’s withdrawal.
In response to the interest expressed by rugby unions to compete in the 2024 Rugby fifteens, Asia Rugby made the decision to incorporate Kazakhstan and India into the Asia Rugby Men’s Division 1. Consequently, there will be no Division 2 competition this year.
